Free Relaxation Mini-Poster
For all those who signed up to do the (low-stress) 30-Day Challenge, I've been sending out weekly "encouragement emails" which include inspirational (8.5" x 11") mini-posters. (Sign up before January 31, 2017 to receive your own Free 30-DayChallenge package, which will include the weekly emails.) Of course those posters have been related to gentle motivation, persistence, perfectionism and how to handle setbacks.
My favourite relaxation quote
But this morning I started thinking about creating a little poster with a saying about relaxation or stress-relief and so reviewed some of my own favourite quotes. Oh, how hard it was to choose just one! Finally, however, this one emerged as the winner:
Relax and let the breath do what it must without trying to affect it.
Don't try to control when you breathe in or out.
The body rather than the mind is the driver.
I love this quote because it speaks to my own experiences with relaxation. What I've found is that the advice to "relax" or "take deep breaths" can often intensify stress rather than relieve it and that relaxation has as much or more to do with the body's automatic and unconscious processes than the mind's decision-making control.
Do you know how fast emotions and stress can be activated?
Faster than the blink of an eye!
Author Elizabeth Harper Neeld writes that emotions spark as quickly as 120 milliseconds (.0012 seconds) after being triggered. For comparison, a hummingbird's wingbeat is .02 seconds and the blink of an eye happens in .025 seconds. The visual below highlights just how fast 120 milliseconds is compared to the blink of an eye or a clock ticking off the seconds:
